Absolutely amazing house. Perfect spot for a countryside retreat with a bit of everything: hikes, dog walking, dinner parties, fishing... All while being surrounded by the most stunning scenery. Loved it. I'd definitely recommend arriving in daylight though, otherwise easy to miss the house but the host is always on hand, very helpful and really laid back.

Thanks for welcoming us on Friday afternoon. We had a fabulous weekend and everyone loved the house and thought is was immediately very homely and comfortable. The team have done a brilliant job in updating the important areas, without taking away the essential feel and grace of the original house. We decided that travelling back would be easier leaving at 4 ish from the Griffin , than coming back and had the time to hopefully leave the house pretty much as we found it.
Shaun cooked us a splendid meal most professionally and everyone was most impressed and felt it really added to the occasion.
We had a great walk from Erwood up onto the ridge and across for a view of the house from across the river. Spectacular views up there and very sunny-a bonus!
We were a large party of friends wanting a quiet weekend to relax and explore the Brecon Beacons.Jo was really welcoming and had great local knowledge and useful recommendations. We arrived to a delicious home-made cake! Abernant House was really spacious and comfortable and plenty big enough for 10 of us. The gardens are absolutely stunning and we would all thoroughly recommend this property.
Its difficult to know where to start with Abernant as the house has so many amazing features to talk about.
We were looking for the perfect party house and weekend retreat for a 3 generation 40th birthday party and Abernant seemed to it the bill perfectly.
Firstly, the booking process was absolutely seamless and Jo answered every single question and pre-empted a few more before they had even been asked, providing loads of advice and information about the house and the activities available.
On arrival, we were met at the house by Jo, a lovely lemon cake, 2 dozen double yoke eggs and lovely bunch of flowers and even a card for the birthday girl.
After a quick 20 minute tour of the whole house along with an explanation of the history of all the rooms, we were left alone to enjoy all that the house had to offer.
Each of the living areas is fantastic in its own way, from the wooden panelled tv snug to the fantastic kitchen with a huge AGA and the massive oak table, the library with a fascinating and eclectic mix of books, the dining room with its hand painted Chinese wallpaper to the nicest room, the drawing room with its open fireplace, comfortable sofas and the grand piano.
The artefacts and antiques from the owners Grandfather, Lord Caccia, were enough to keep the history buffs happy for hours on end, not to mention the huge collection of sheet music for the piano.
Sadly, the weather wasn't great, but the kids still spent most of the Saturday in the huge garden, playing under the tree and on the rope swing.
The bedrooms were all nicely furnished and proportioned with the beds being really comfortable, with a good mix of rooms to allow young kids to stay with their parents or to be independent if they wanted.
Some of the rooms were stunning with balconies and amazing views over the surrounding countryside
A couple of the rooms had ensuite bathrooms and there were at least another 2 bathrooms , to be honest, I lost count.
There were only 2 showers though, but to be honest this didn't seem to be an issue either and certainly no one complained about it.
All in all, one of the nicest weekends we've ever had as a large family group and would love to return again; thanks Jo, for making us all so welcome!
Highly recommend a stay in Abernant, Jo was so helpful and flexible to last minute changes! The house is warm and friendly and you instantly feel at home, all the rooms are comfortable and spacious, we even managed to do some Scottish reeling in kitchen! You definitely want to bring a piano player you, as they have the most gorgeous piano! Thank you again for our wonderful stay.
We stayed in Abernant House for 3 nights, 3-6th Oct, for my son's small wedding celebration (only 12 people). What I want to say is just - WOW! Such a fantastic place, secluded beauty, amazingly cosy house, full of history and charms. We felt privileged to have a chance to live there for the short time.
The weather was sunny and warm. The garden was perfect and it made our time in Abernant truly exceptional!
Shaun was our chef. He was terrific!
Special thank you to Jo. She was such a wonderful host and made us feel so welcome and paid attention to everything from all the little details to tastefully decorating the rooms . Thank you very much.
It was unforgettable experience!
14 of us ageing from 20 to 29 stayed for a weekend on the 8th July at Abernant and I think it's fair to say we're all missing it. Jo was really friendly when showing us around even left us a cake and a basket of eggs which was a nice touch and went down a treat.
The house is huuuuuge!! And secluded which was great for us not having to worry about disturbing any neighbours. We made use of the bbq over the weekend despite the weather, we took shelter under the huge tree in the garden which was very cosy.
The river down the bottom of the garden is amazing, and having private use to it was even better.
The only down side was that we didn't stay longer..
Overall we all agreed we'd come back to this stunning house in the future.
Thanks for having us :)

I surprised my boyfriend for his 30th birthday and took him and nine friends to Abernant house for the weekend. We had a brilliant time.
Jo had prepared balloons and a cake for when we arrived, the grounds were fantastic, we had our own private beach leading onto the River Wye and went on a great walk up to the forest, which was the only time we left the house! We ordered a huge food delivery and had a big BBQ the first night followed by cooking a huge curry on the Aga the second night which was extremely easy to cook on, and kept the house nice and warm! The house was incredible, from the hand painted Chinese wallpaper to our bedroom which opened out to a balcony with the most beautiful view of the forest. Even though it rained the second day we were more than happy to stay in the house playing the piano, chess, board games and just dance around a house we all wished we could live in! If you're looking for somewhere relaxed with amazing interiors, a lovely host and great walks you NEED to visit. There is so much to do but equally so many places to just sit and relax. We will definitely be coming back!
Thank you Jo! Scott had the best birthday ever.
I wanted to pass on my thanks from everyone that stayed at Abernant House last weekend. It was absolutely perfect! The card and cake were so generous and the lemon drizzle the best I've ever tasted!
This is our second visit to the magical Abernant House and was better than ever. The house feels like a gorgeous family home and Jo is a welcoming host, We had a really relaxing week and were lucky to have such glorious sunshine to see the garden in full flower. The large kitchen has lots of utensils, crockery and glasses and plenty of space for the nine of us to cook, eat and chat over breakfast and dinner. There was a supply of logs for us to light a fire occasionally in the evening in the drawing room and relax in the comfortable sofas. All the bedrooms are large with good beds and fluffy towels and most overlook the garden. No mobile signal, except for those on O2, but the wifi works if you really need to keep in touch, though I don't think fast broadband has got to Abernant. We hope to return again!
Having just returned from a hen weekend stay at Abernant House with 11 lovely ladies, I just wanted to write and say thank you. On arrival we were greeted with a delicious lemon cake and a basket of eggs. Every room was ready to receive our group, comfortable beds and clean bedding awaited us. The kitchen is so well stocked and we wanted for nothing when preparing all our meals. Aga is amazing to cook on and everyone was able to sit around the magnificent table. Perfect for socialising into the early hours. So much space and rooms to choose from. Our resident pianist particularly enjoyed the piano! Gardens are spotless and the river section is idyllic. The tree swing provided much entertainment also. Perfectly situated for our needs (a spot of gorge walking) and we popped into Builth for a few drinks.
Jo was the perfect host and we can't recommend this house enough. The history that surrounds it and the beautiful hand painted wallpaper is amazing. We'd love to visit again - can't recommend enough!!!
For her 30th birthday, I decided to surprise my girlfriend with a weekend away in Wales. 10 good friends joined us, meaning we were 12 in total for the weekend (plus a very very happy dog). Where do I start?! Everything was amazing - Jo was an incredible host - she baked a birthday cake, wrote a card & gave us some lovely eggs on arrival.
Although we didn't know the exact size of our group until the last minute, she was incredibly accommodating and very relaxed. She gave us a quick tour of the house and told us of the fascinating history within! The house & grounds are breathtaking.
We arrived on the Friday night (having ordered a delivery from the supermarket prior to arrival) and not one of us left the land owned by the house until it was time to leave on Sunday afternoon (we paid a small extra fee to be able to enjoy the Sunday there - and had a lovely roast). The house is massive! Everyone was very comfortable in their own bedrooms (either twin or double) and there were ample bathrooms so we never felt on top of one another, but it was also intimate and cosy enough that it felt warm & welcoming, and the downstairs areas were perfect for the large group we had. I know it's a cliché but words really don't do it justice! We are already planning our next trip and couldn't recommend it highly enough for a group of a similar size (10-15 people), regardless of age and interests.
We spent the weekend at Abernant House for a friends hen party and had a brilliant time. The house is huge, comfortable and ideal for socialising, it has lots of character as well as stunning views. Jo was a great host and made us very welcome. Would highly recommend.
We had my very relaxed stag do at Abernant, and the house is STUNNING. Every room is beautiful (the view from the master bedroom has to be seen to be believed), the furnishings are classy and luxurious, and the local area is wonderful to walk around, with the River Wye at the bottom of the garden. The house kitchen, and the chef Jo provided were both brilliant; we had a brilliant meal, and the house easily catered to meals for a dozen.
Just spent the weekend with friends and family in this beautiful, spacious house near Builth. It was relaxing, warm with real fires, very homely, and the beds were super comfy. I was celebrating a special birthday, and the owner recommended a chef to cook for us on the Saturday night. It was a real treat. We weren't really looking for local attractions, just wanted a place to get together - eat, drink, and talk till the early hours. Perfect! Diolch yn fawr!
Just returned from a wonderful w/e at Abernant House, 13 family - 3 generations, our first stay and we hope to return. Very comfortable and relaxing house, beautifully decorated with a library of books to browse, plenty of space and excellent bedroom/bathroom ratio. Brilliantly appointed kitchen which formed the hub for all our huge family meals. Jo, the manager, was very helpful throughout the booking and gave us a warm welcome on arrival, her lemon curd cake was especially appreciated!
We stayed at Abernant House and it was a great choice. Plenty of space for a large family, loads of bedrooms and bathrooms and a very well-stocked kitchen. Lovely garden.
We recently stayed at Abernant House. It is a fantastic property with loads of space and character. Ideal for sociable groups, particularly families. It is set in a stunning location in the heart of Wales, and is a fantastic place to go if you need to get away from it all - an enjoyable time had by all!
We had 13 people staying at Abernant, for a joint birthday weekend away. Despite being at capacity there was still plenty of room for everyone to spread out and relax. The kitchen was excellent and the main living room was perfect for the evenings. All the beds were super soft and cosy, and the bathrooms well appointed and kept. We all really enjoyed the fact that Abernant had clearly been lived in before, and was not just another holiday let. There was so much history, and fantastic pieces of furniture and art.
Agree with below about the internet being very patchy, but clearly no ones fault, and actually it was really nice just to disconnect and switch off for a weekend.
Jo was excellent in arranging everything for our stay, and Jenny very hospitable when we arrived and left. Thanks again for a wonderful stay, and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
We had a fantastic stay at Abernant and hope to visit again one day. We were 3 families with 7 children between us (age 7 and under). The house is beautiful and huge - plenty of space to accommodate us all - each family pretty much had their own section of the house upstairs. Downstairs there is a lovely sociable kitchen with a large table and also a formal dining room. The huge formal lounge is beautiful and there is also a snug. Plenty of space for the kids to play hide & seek. The house has so much character I just can't describe how lovely it is. The double bedrooms are beautiful and ours had a balcony with a wonderful view over the garden. We would love to visit again and would thoroughly recommend it.
We have just spent two nights in Abernant House, near Builth Wells. Such a wonderful place to stay! The house is set in a fabulous location, right on the river Wye and has enormous grounds. The garden is filled with stunning trees (that were just beautiful at this time of year), the largest tree has a great swing that was enjoyed by all the kids (and some of the adults!).
The house itself is truly lovely - it's very spacious and therefore ideal for our three families (6 adults and 7 children aged 7 and under). The bedrooms were enormous with lots of room for travel cots, luggage etc. There seemed to be bathrooms galore making it so easy with the kids.
The kitchen was really well stocked - large pans suitable for cooking for large groups. Endless mugs, glasses making the whole self catering experience so much more enjoyable. We loved cooking on the Aga too. There is lots of dining and sitting space - the kids had so much fun playing hide and seek around the house!
The manager of the property was very helpful and informative and even baked us a delicious cake for our arrival!! We celebrated halloween at the house and the stunning dining room was perfect to turn into a spooky party for the kids. Without question we would recommend this as a place for large groups / families to enjoy and relaxing weekend and breath taking scenery.
We accidentally left one of the children's trollies in the garden and Jeni was fabulous in making arrangements to get it returned asap. Much appreciated and without question going above and beyond what we expected.
Thank you so much for a super weekend.
What a great place for 12 friends to chill out for the weekend. It rained all the time and that stopped any trips out of the house other than to re stock the depleting wine store. Shaun the chef had prepared a large chilli for us on the Friday evening, we cooked our own jacket potatoes and we all stayed around the fire, a great night in. The next day we lit both fires, the weather was terrible so we just spent the day chilling, eating and drinking. Shaun the chef came in again and prepared a three course meal for the evening and that was a huge success his wife served us and they cleared up after us and them. We left on Sunday afternoon after a late brunch all in all a great weekend enjoyed by all. The house is fantastic, large enough for twelve without getting under each others feet but intimate as well. Jo is very good at what she does.
The perfect place for a group of friends and wives to celebrate 50 years since we were all together at St Edmund Hall Oxford. House feels like a family home and the warm welcome and brilliant bedrooms and living rooms make Abernant House really special. So is the setting by the river and with wonderful walks from the door. Proximity to main road makes for some traffic noise during the day.
What a lovely place, wonderful time had by the 13 of us; kids, grandparents and parents all enjoyed.
Finding a house large enough to accommodate the 12 of us - three generations of a family - with all the various room requirements, let alone the actual space, both inside and out and in the area desired is not always easy. What can one say? Abernant met all the above, with bells on. It is a stunning house, with immense character, beautifully appointed, blissfully comfortable inside, and with a glorious garden with both the Nant and the Wye to appeal to every inner child! The bedrooms are very pretty, light, airy, spacious, with beautiful linens. Ample bathrooms with a mix of baths and excellent showers to accommodate all. The spacious and well-appointed kitchen is ideal for a large number and has all you need - Aga included - with a fabulous table allowing plenty of space for long, lazy, and noisy gatherings! With a further four rooms downstairs, there is more than enough space for a quiet place to retreat to with the paper, book or a chat, and for those wishing technology and the television and noise. Okay, the WiFi isn't as good as perhaps one is used to and mobile reception can be a bit dodgy, but to be honest, it was rather good to get away from all that! More than enough room in the garden for cricket or football without disturbing those sitting with a glass of something suitable. The beautiful location, with views across the Wye to Aberedw Rocks - especially glorious in the evening light - is the icing on the cake. Jo was so welcoming, helpful and friendly, right from the first contact, and looked after us all so well, absolutely brilliant. A basket of pretty and fresh eggs and a seriously delicious cake awaited our arrival - a lovely touch, thank you Jo. All in all, we had a very happy, relaxing, fun and precious family time, that went all too quickly, can't wait for a return visit!
Beautiful, comfortable house. loads of room to spread out and relax. Excellent facilities such as enough bathrooms for a party of 12 for there to be no queuing. Huge garden perfect for cricket matches and archery with a great BBQ under the majestic copper beech. We all paddled in the stream and river and explored the grounds. Our party ranged from people in their eighties to small children and everyone loved the place. Fab kitchen with great appliances, comfy sofa's, logs for the fire, enormous beds with delicious bed-linen, it's a charming place. My only complaint is we did not stay long enough! Jo was brilliant at giving us information, making sure we were happy and checking everything was OK and she also makes a mean Victoria sponge. We will be coming back as soon as we can.
A very spacious and beautiful house, easily able to accomodate the twelve of us, and a lovely garden (especially as azaleas were in flower). We were fortunate to have a week of sunshine, so it was not much of a pity we had no pianist to play the grand piano! The woods across the road from the house were also full of bluebells. The kitchen had plenty of utensils, crockery etc. and an enormous Aga and fridge.
Although there is Wifi, don't expect too much, it was very easily overloaded, and unless you are on O2, forget mobile phone reception. Jo was very friendly and efficient, and is planning various improvements: emeregency lighting is being installed this summer (during the gaps between lets) and I hope some better light outside the front door.
Although there are about five bathrooms, they mostly don't have showers (two I think) which is a small drawback.
Had a blissful time in this period gem of a house. Lovely rooms and grounds. But best of all was the wonderfully personal welcome from Jo, who'd brought us free range eggs and baked us a cake. Already booked again for next two years (at least). Michelle.
This is a lovely big house for all types of groups - I had both family with young children and friends stay during the week. The location is beautiful and it is easy to get to the Brecon Beacons. The river at the bottom of the garden is very special and we spent many hours skimming stones down there. The garden is lovely and big for kids and dogs and the house is comfortable and clean. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a place to chill out.
Abernant House was exactly what we were looking for - a wonderful house in a lovely relaxing rural setting. We had 5 young children with us and they loved the big house and running around the great gardens. The adults all enjoyed the comfortable accommodation and the fantastic fires that kept us warm in spite of the cold weather! Jo was a wonderful host and we'd highly recommend this for a weekend away or longer break.
This House is truly amazing, beautifully decorated, cozy and warm. No one wanted to leave and we already are trying to organize a return visit.
Jo is super friendly and relaxed and was knowledgeable on the area and various hikes!!
I very rarely write reviews, but this house is worth it!!.
We were celebrating a big birthday for my mum and she wanted friends and family around her. It isn't easy to find a places that can accommodate so many and that is high quality and reasonably priced.
Abernant is also beautiful - it has 'something' about it. A real fire and a grand piano in the huge living room, the aga, the gardens, and the historic names who have stayed in the past.
Staying here is smooth because you are guided by the property manager Jo. She is a lady who really gets what people need and does everything before, during and after to make sure things go smoothy. She lives just across the road so is on hand if you have any immediate queries.
The kitchen is well equipped - huge fridge etc. Half decent wi-fi for the location but do be aware that some mobile networks don't give a signal here. My Vodafone was out for the weekend - which was actually a joy. If you want a break from the kitchen I can recommend take away curry from Bilash in Builth Wells which is 5/10 mins away. The house is a period property and it is lived in but in a good way. Don't expect a perfect refurbished condition but that is the charm of the place. Crucially things like the kitchen services are in great modern condition.
All in all I can't recommend this place enough. We will be going back.
Abernant House is full of history, atmosphere and beauty. Aberenant House provides a stunning backdrop for some very special memories. Jo, the agent, is friendly and helpful, she has made our stay a dream come true.
